Bulls Stand Seventh After First Day Of Purdue Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - After the first day of the Purdue Men's Invitational, the University at Buffalo stands seventh in a seven-team field with 69 points. The host Boilermakers lead the three-day meet with 231 points. Northwestern (189.50), Southern Illinois (176), Iowa (170.50), Ohio State (88) and Wyoming (87) complete the field. Leading UB individuals on Friday was sophomore diver Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda). Lee scored an eighth-place finish on the one-meter board with a total of 245.65 points in the final round. Lee reached the eight-man final round by scoring 248.25 points in the preliminaries. Other individual pointscorers for the Bulls were Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) and Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) in the 500 freestyle. Sy placed 10th in the race in a season-best 4:38.01 after a preliminary mark of 4:38.05 in the afternoon session. Yarger also turned in a season-best time finishing 14th in the evening session in 4:41.09, cutting a second and a half off his qualifying time of 4:42.64. UB's 200 freestyle relay team of Aviv Oren (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel/Makif A'), Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Alan Lowe (Brownsville, TX/Hanna) finished 10th in 1:26.73. The 400 medley relay squad of Hurst, Oren, Sy and Yarger finished 14th in 3:30.38. Competition continues through Sunday. |
