Bulls Sink Canisius in Home Opener
The University at Buffalo men’s swimming and diving team hosted Canisius College in its home opener at the Alumni Arena Natatorium Friday night coming away with a 138-70 victory. The Bulls improved to 3-0 overall while Canisius dropped to 0-5. The victory was also UB’s 15th consecutive in the series that started in 1969-70.
McDowell Ties Diving Record
 Michael McDowell | Freshman diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) tied the school record with his victory in the one-meter competition. McDowell tallied a six-dive total of 314.10 points, equalling the dual meet mark set by Patrick Lee in 2004. McDowell also scored a season-high 313.50 points on the three-meter board, exhibitioning the event. UB’s other diver, Dominic LaForest (Philadelphia, NY/Indian River) also scored season-highs on both the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 216.38 and 190.00, respectively.
Vander Zalm and Woster Earn Double Victories
 Scott Woster | Double winners for the Bulls against the Golden Griffins included freshmen Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole). Vander Zalm took the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best 9:53.91. He also came back to take the 100-yard freestyle in 50.11. Woster captured first place in the 200-yard indvidual medley in 2:04.50 and the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.65.
Tamchyna Remains Unbeaten in Backstroke
 Andrew Tamchyna | Freshman Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket) remained undefeated in the 200-yard backstroke, winning in 1:55.54 to lower his season-best mark in the event. Tamchyna also combined with freshman Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden), senior Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and sophomore Dave Harris (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) to win the 400-yard medley relay in 3:40.00. Tamchyna swam the 100-yard backstroke distance of the race in 53.68, a season-best time.
Four More Bulls Earn Single Victories
Besides Tamchyna’s single win in the 200-yard backstroke on Friday, four other Bulls earned one win each. Sophomore Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.71. Sophomore Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) took the 50-yard freestyle in 22.52. Sophomore Michael Gerlach (Penfield, NY/Penfield) won the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:48.44. Song won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.77.
Three-Day Akron Meet Next on the Schedule
The Bulls travel to Akron for the SummaCare Invitational in their next action. The three-day meet kicks off on December 1. The Bulls finished sixth of six squads at last season’s meet that included familiar foes St. Bonaventure and Ohio University. UB’s women’s team will also be competing in the meet.
