Bulls Split Double Dual With Bonnies, Niagara

UB men's swimmers fall in final race to SBU 125-116; defeat Purple Eagles 184-57

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's swim meet with local rival St. Bonaventure came down to the final event with just one second making the difference as the Bulls fell to the Bonnies 125-116 Satuday afternoon at Alumni Natatorium. In other dual meet scoring, UB defeated Niagara 184-57 and St. Bonaventure downed Niagara 193-48.

The UB-St. Bonaventure meet headed into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, tied at 112-112. UB's foursome of freshman Jimmy Mulvey (Monroe-Woodbury, NY), sophomore Tony Lizauckas (Kenmore, NY), freshman Kevin Kotowski (Wilmington, DE) and freshman Peter Zeitler (Amherst, NY) kept pace with St. Bonaventure's entry of Nicholas Bedward, Lance Dionne, Ryan Sprang and Borut Poje trading leads throughout the race. Eventually, Poje touched out Zeitler for the 11 first place points as the Bonnies took the race in 3:14.56 with UB taking second in 3:15.58. The Bonnies also took third place giving St. Bonaventure 13 points in the event to UB's four to decide the meet.

UB head coach Budd Termin said of his team's effort, "We didn't lose because we didn't perform. The performances are really good. The upperclassmen are swimming ahead of where they were last year and the new guys, which are fifty percent of our lineup, are swimming way ahead of what they did in high school."

The Bulls (1-2) won seven of the 13 events while St. Bonaventure (3-2) took the remaining six. UB picked up double victories from the senior trio of Jason McLachlan (Arvada, CO), Josh Pun (Edmonton, Alb.) and Eric Stimson (North Tonawanda, NY).

McLachlan took the distance events, sweeping the 1000 freestyle in 10:04.52 and 500 freestyle in 4:47.15. Freshman Alan Lowe (Brownsville, TX) took second in both events in 10:07.73 for the 1000 and 4:54.35 in the 500. Lowe's times were lifetime bests in both events.

Pun was victorious in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.30 and 200 butterfly in 1:57.06. Dexter Tatum (Gainesville, GA), UB's fourth senior, placed second in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.76.

Stimson won the 200 individual medley in 1:56.41 and the 200 backstroke in 1:53.07. His 200 backstroke time is the fastest in the Mid-American Conference improving on his 1:54.29 from UB's season opener at Ohio on Nov. 4.

Freshman diver Dave Farmer (Grand Island, NY) was also victorious for the Bulls taking the 3-meter competition with 255.70 points. Farmer finished second in the 1-meter event to St. Bonaventure's Randy Kozlowski. Kozlolwski scored 257.05 points on the 1-meter board to Farmer's 244.20.

Other individual winners for St. Bonaventure included Ernest Teo in the 50 freestyle (21.34) and 100 freestyle (47.46) and Kyle VanDenBerghe in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.78).

The Bulls are next in action at the Penn State Invitational December 1-3. Their next dual meet is against Niagara December 7 at Alumni Natatorium at 6:00 pm.
