Bulls Drown Golden Griffins, 138-70

Michael McDowell ties men's one-meter diving record

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team hosted Canisius College in its home opener at Alumni Arena Natatorium Friday night coming away with a 138-70 victory. The Bulls improved to 3-0 overall while Canisius dropped to 0-5. The victory was also UB's 15th consecutive in the series that started in 1969-70.

Freshman diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) tied the school record with his victory in the one-meter competition. McDowell tallied a six-dive total of 314.10 points, equalling the dual meet mark set by Patrick Lee in 2004. McDowell also scored 313.50 points on the three-meter board, exhibitioning the event.

Double winners for the Bulls included freshmen Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole). Vander Zalm took the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle in a season-best 9:53.91. He also came back to take the 100-yard freestyle in 50.11. Woster captured first place in the 200-yard indvidual medley in 2:04.50 and the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.65.

Freshman Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket) remained undefeated in the 200-yard backstroke, winning in 1:55.54 to lower his season-best mark. Sophomore Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.71. Sophomore Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) took the 50-yard freestyle in 22.52. Sophomore Michael Gerlach (Penfield, NY/Penfield) won the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best 4:48.44. Freshman Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.77.

Tamchyna, Song, senior Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and sophomore Dave Harris (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) combined to win the 400-yard medley relay in 3:40.00.

The Bulls travel to Akron for the SummaCare Invitational in their next action. The three-day meet kicks off on December 1.
