McDowell Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo sophomore diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced in Cleveland this afternoon. McDowell, a mathematics major with a 3.901 grade point average, won three of four events in UB's two swim meets against MAC foes Eastern Michigan and Ball State last weekend. Against EMU on Friday November 9, McDowell turned in a six-dive total of 298.20 points for the UB win on the three-meter board. McDowell was also victorious twice against Ball State on Saturday, November 10, winning the one-meter event at 310.43 points and the three-meter event, just missing out on his school record, with a total of 350.85 points. The total was six points shy of the three-meter record that he had posted against Duquesne on October 19. McDowell’s two victories against Ball State helped the Bulls to defeat the Cardinals, 129-113, gaining their first league win of the season. McDowell is the second UB athlete to earn the MAC’s Scholar-Athlete Award in the previous two weeks. Women’s soccer player Andrea Vescio (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) earned the women’s award on November 9. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
