Vander Zalm Wins MAC Award
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo freshman Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Week. The league announced the award at its home office in Cleveland late Tuesday afternoon. Vander Zalm, making his collegiate debut, scored an individual victory and anchored a winning relay squad as the Bulls defeated Ball State, 137-106, in the season opener on October 27. The win over the Cardinals in Muncie, IN was UB's first against the MAC member since a 123-120 triumph in the 1999-2000 season. It also broke a string of six losses in season-openers for the Bulls. Vander Zalm, a distance specialist, took first place in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.16 and combined with sophomores Dave Harris (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) and Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) and junior Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:12.42. Vander Zalm also finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:58.18. The Bulls travel to local rival Niagara on Saturday for a meet with the Purple Eagles starting at 1:00 pm. |
