Bulls Open Campaign With Pair of MAC Losses

The men's swimming and diving team opened the 2005-06 season at home with a pair of tough losses to MAC rivals. UB opened with a 136-101 loss to Ball State on Friday and fell 144-95 to Miami (OH) on Saturday. Both meets went down to the last few events before a winner could be determined.

Junior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) scored a pair of victories for the Bulls against Ball State to begin the 2005-06 season. Adams, a backstroker by nature, opened with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a lifetime-best 9:58.50 and came back to win his signature event, the 200-yard backstroke, in 1:55.83. On Saturday, he established his second lifetime best in as many days, again winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:47.15.

Medley Relayers Go Two-for-Two

The Bulls began both meets over the weekend with victories in the first event, the 400-yard medley relay. The UB foursome of Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale), Leandro Souza (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Missouri State), Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) rallied to overtake the Ball State relayers in the final 25 yards as Hurst touched the wall first to give the Bulls the victory in 3:35.33, edging out Ball State's Jagen Arnold by a second. After three legs of the race, the Bulls trailed the Cardinals, but Hurst was able to make up the distance in the freestyle portion and close the gap. On Saturday, the UB foursome won in 3:36.82, nearly four seconds ahead of Miami's top relay squad.

Hurst Scores Double Victories Against RedHawks

Aside from the opening medley victory against Miami, Jeff Hurst also took a pair of individual races. He won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.90 and then followed with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.77, just touching out Miami's Zachary Siegel by .14 seconds.

Lynch Makes Splash in Collegiate Debut

Against Ball State, freshman Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) earned the first collegiate victories of his career, sweeping the one- and three-meter diving events. Lynch scored 283.95 points off the one-meter board for his six dives and then totaled 297.97 points on the three-meter board. Lynch finished second in both events against Miami, just missing first place in the one-meter event by less than two points.

Bulls Set Eight Lifetime Bests in Opening Weekend

In the weekend meets, UB swimmers established eight lifetime-best times, including three by freshman Mike Gerlach (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and two by Luke Adams. Gerlach established a lifetime best with his 1:44.47 finish in the 200-yard freestyle and helped the Bulls to a one-two finish in the event against Miami. Gerlach also established a second lifetime best in the meet, opening the 400-yard freestyle relay. His split time of 48.02 for the 100-yard distance of the event lowered the 48.22 he posted against Ball State on Friday. Adams posted lifetime bests in both of the weekend's 1,000-yard freestyle races, winning both times. Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored lifetime bests in the 200-yard freestyle against Ball State while Shi earned a best mark in the 200-yard backstroke.
