Bulls Pick Up Season-Opening Win at Ball State

The University at Buffalo men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2006-07 campaign with a 137-106 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Ball State, Friday evening at Ball State’s Lewellen Aquatic Center. The Bulls (1-0) won eight of the 13 events with six individuals taking single events and UB sweeping both relay races. The victory broke a string of six losses in season-openers and was the first time the Bulls had defeated Ball State since the 1999-2000 season.

Head coach Budd Termin brought in 13 new freshmen and transfers for the 2006-07 roster and the Bulls relied on their newcomers for the victory over the Cardinals with five freshmen winning their first collegiate races.

Freshmen Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole) scored indiviudal wins and also were part of winning relays to lead the Bulls. Vander Zalm took first place in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.16 while Woster won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.86.

Three other freshmen scored individual victories for the Bulls. Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket) took the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.22. Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.60 and Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) took the three-meter diving competition with a six-dive total of 275.78 points.

Sophomore Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) was the lone UB returnee to score an individual win in the Ball State meet. Schuster took the 100-yard freestyle in 49.00. Schuster turned in the Bulls’ fastest 100-yard freestyle mark last season with a 47.32 clocking at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Foursomes Sweep Relay Races

Both of UB’s relay squads were victorious in the meet with Ball State. The UB foursome of sophomore Dave Harris (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia), sophomore Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale), junior Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Vander Zalm took the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:12.42. Senior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) combined with three freshmen, Jordan Matthews (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Woster and Simon Hall (Newcastle, England/Queen Elizabeth) to win the 400-yard medley relay in 3:35.94.

Date With the Purple Eagles Up Next for Bulls

The Bulls travel to Niagara on Saturday, November 4, in their next action starting at 1:00 pm at Niagara’s Oxy Aquatics Center. UB defeated the Purple Eagles, 107-73, in their last meeting on January 18, 2006, marking the 26th straight victory by the Bulls over Niagara in the all-time series.
