McDowell Takes MAC Swimmer of the Week Honors
BUFFALO, NY – For the second consecutive week, a University at Buffalo athlete has been selected by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Swimmer of the Week. UB sophomore diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) was selected by the league today following a record setting performance. McDowell broke both of the school diving records that he had set as a freshman last season with his performance in UB's 129-107 dual-meet win against Duquesne on Friday, October 19. In the one-meter competition, McDowell scored 325.88 points, bettering his own mark from last season by two points. McDowell came back to claim the three-meter victory, extending his existing school record, with a total of 356.92 for the six-dive program. The previous record was 338.80 set by McDowell as a freshman in the 2006-07 season. This is the second time in his career that McDowell has been recognized by the MAC as its Men's Swimmer of the Week. McDowell won the award last February after establishing the one-meter diving record in a meet against St. Bonaventure. The Bulls have collected three Swimmer of the Week awards over the past two weeks. Besides McDowell's honor this week, UB sophomores Andrea Lehner (Lockport, NY/Orchard Park) and Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) were named as the MAC's top swimmers on October 17 following their performances at the season-opening Western New York Invitational. The UB men's team returns to action on November 9 against league champion Eastern Michigan at Alumni Arena Natatorium at 4:00 pm. |
