Men's Swim Squad Named to Academic All-American Team

UB program earns recognition from College Swim Coaches Association of America

BUFFALO, NY – The men's swimming and diving program at the University at Buffalo has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America's Academic All-American Team for the fall 2006 semester, the association announced recently.

The Bulls compiled a 2.86 combined grade point average for the first semester of the 2006-07 school year, ranking the squad in the Commendable category, according the CSCAA's ranking system. A program is deemed Commedable if it posts a 2.80 GPA or better. Schools can also be ranked as Excellent (3.00) or Superior (3.25), depending on their GPA. UB was among 66 men's Division I programs to meet the criteria. A total of 352 teams, 142 men's and 210 women's, from the NCAA's three divisions as well as NAIA and junior college programs, earned team Academic All-America honors.

Three additional Mid-American Conference programs were also on the list, Ball State (3.20), Eastern Michigan (3.08) and Miami (OH) (3.01).

UB posted its best-ever finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by the Bulls at Alumni Arena Natatorium, to conclude the 2006-07 season. The Bulls finished fourth with a MAC meet school record of 378 points.

In the classroom, sophomore backstroker Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) was named to the Mid-American Conference's Academic All-League team at the end of the season.

Since the Bulls joined the Division I swimming ranks in 1991, UB has missed making the CSCAA’s list of top academic teams in just four semesters.
