BUFFALO, NY - Four University at Buffalo student-athletes, Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) and Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) were named to the men's swimming and diving Academic All-Mid-American Conference team. A total of 17 student-athletes from the five MAC schools that sponsor men's swimming were named to the Academic All-MAC team.

Adams, a sophomore mechanical engineering major with a 3.202 grade point average, was UB's top backstroker in 2004-05. He finished the regular season undefeated in the 200-yard backstroke against MAC competition, winning the race in all four league dual meets this season. Adams earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors with a pair of sixth-place finishes at the ECAC Championships on February 26 and 27, posting career bests in the 100-yard backstroke (52.32) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.69). He also won the 100-yard backstroke consolation race in 52.75 at the MAC Championships.

Hurst, a junior accounting major with a 3.619 grade point average, was part of three UB relay teams at the MAC Championships. He helped the 400-yard freestyle relay to a season-best 3:09.25 and in his leg of the race, the opening 100-yard distance, he posted a lifetime-best clocking of 47.09. He also finished the season with UB's fastest 200-yard individual medley race at 1:55.25 at December's Zippy Invitational and earned MAC Swimmer of the Week honors on January 11 after leading the Bulls past Canisius.

Sy, a senior computer engineering major with a 3.573 grade point average, was also named to the 2003-04 Academic All-MAC squad. He just missed breaking his own record in the 200-yard butterfly with his 1:52.79 clocking in the finals to finish seventh overall at the MAC Championships, just four-tenths of a second off his school record set in 2003. Sy also finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.26. In 2004-05, he was a two-time MAC Swimmer of the Week winner (November 16 and January 25) and won the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award on February 10.

Geoff Wells
Wells, a senior mechanical and aerospace engineering major with a 3.465 grade point average, earned his second Academic All-MAC recognition after making the squad in 2003-04. He set a lifetime-best with his sixth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at the MAC Championships in 2:06.76 and also posted a lifetime-best 57.89 in the 100 breaststroke at the ECAC Championships, finishing second.

The four UB honorees were second only to Ball State's five selections.

Academic All-MAC honorees must be a sophomore or higher, carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and participate in 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport to be eligible for the yearly honor. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
