Second Day of Diving Complete
BUFFALO, NY – The second day of the 2008 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships turned into a carbon copy of the first day as the men's and women's champions from Friday won again on Saturday at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena. Drexel's Kate Hynes won the women's three-meter event with Pittsburgh's Alex Volovetski taking the one-meter competition. Hynes won the one-meter and Volvetski won the three-meter events on Friday.
In the men's event, Volovetski ran away from the rest of the cometition scoring 781.95 points for his 12 dives. Volovetski scored 390.70 points in the preliminary round and improved on the total with a score of 391.25 in the finals. He defeated Pittsburgh teammate Jeremy Stultz (649.35) by 132.60 points. Jeff Lichtenstein of Yale finished third at 629.55 points. UB's Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) finished sixth in the women's three-meter competition with 530.70 points. Carpenter had the fifth-highest preliminary score of 277.45 and turned in a showing of 283.00 in the finals. She also finished fifth in Friday's one-meter event.
A total of 31 men and 19 women comprised Saturday's fields. After six preliminary dives, the field was narrowed to the top 18 point scorers in both competitions for the final round which consisted of six additional dives. The winners of zone championships advance to the NCAA Championships later this month. The women will compete in Columbus, OH and the men in Federal Way, WA. Five zone meets are being held this weekend with Buffalo, Auburn, AL, Columbus, Houston and Oklahoma City serving as host sites. Competition concludes on Sunday as platform diving will be contested beginning at 11:00 am. |
