Sy, Wells Named to Academic All-MAC Team

UB men's swimmers tabbed for athletic and academic achievements

BUFFALO, NY - Two University at Buffalo student-athletes have been named to the 2003-04 Academic All-Mid-American Conference men's swimming team. The league announced the 16-member team on Tuesday.

Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) and Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) were selected to the league's team in a vote by faculty athletic representatives at MAC member schools that sponsor men's swimming.

Sy, a junior computer engineering major with a 3.53 grade point average, took seventh in the 200 butterfly at last weekend's MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, MI with a 1:53.05 finish in the finals after posting a 1:53.81 in the preliminary round to make the finals as the eighth championship finalist. Sy also finished eighth in the 400 individual medley after clocking a 4:05.78 in the preliminary heats and followed with a 4:08.75 showing in the finals. Earlier in the season, Sy established the UB record in the 200 butterfly with a 1:52.39 showing and posted his best 400 individual medley time of 4:03.44 in November's Purdue Invitational. Sy was also UB's fastest distance freestyler this season, posting the team's top times in the 500 and 1,000 freestyles.

Wells, a junior mechanical engineering major with a 3.50 grade point average, won the consolation race of the 100 breaststroke at the MAC Championships in 58.07. It was the second consecutive year that Wells had won the 100 breaststroke consolation race, taking the honor in a then-lifetime-best 58.79 at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium in 2003. Wells also finished second in the 200 breaststroke consolation in 2:07.79 at last week's meet and posted UB's top time in the event (2:07.41) at the Purdue Invitational.

The Bulls scored 322 points to finish fifth at the MAC Championships. The point total was the most that UB had accumulated since joining the league in 1998.

The honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
