ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo finished the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in fifth place as the three-day meet concluded at the Ohio Aquatic Center. The Bulls posted 259 points while Miami (Ohio) broke Eastern Michigan's string of six consecutive team championships, scoring 888.5 points to hold off the Eagles' 881. Ohio (572.5), Ball State (491) and UB rounded out the field.

Junior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) posted a season-best time to reach the championship finals of the 200-yard backstroke. Adams finished fourth in Saturday afternoon's heats in 1:52.91, just shy of his lifetime-best by two-tenths of a second. In the championship race, Adams placed fifth overall in 1:53.72. Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) and Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy) competed in the consolation race. Shi finished 12th overall, fourth in the consolation, in 1:56.84, while Bessel posted season-bests in the heats and finals. Bessel turned in a preliminary time of 1:57.75 and then lowered the mark to 1:57.28 to place 14th overall and sixth in the consolation.

UB had two consolation finalists in the 100-yard freestyle. Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) finished 14th overall, sixth in the consolation race, in a season-best 47.68. Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) took 15th overall, seventh in the consolation, in 48.03, after posting a lifetime-best 47.32 in the preliminaries.

Leandro Souza (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Missouri State) finished 15th overall and seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke consolations in 2:16.79. He clocked a 2:16.45 in the preliminary round.

The Bulls posted three consolation finalists in the 200-yard butterfly. Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) posted a lifetime-best 1:55.54 in the preliminaries and finished third in the consolation final, 11th overall, in 1:56.54. Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) placed sixth in the consolation and 14th overall in 1:57.88 while his brother Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) was seventh in the race and 15th overall in 1:58.50 after posting a lifetime-best 1:57.07 in Saturday's heats.

Diver Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) faltered in his attempt to take the three-meter diving title. Lynch, who scored the second-most points (310.90) in Friday's opening round, finished sixth in Saturday night's finals with a six-dive total of 277.40 points.

The Bulls also finished fifth in the meet's closing race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, but posted a season-best mark in the process. UB finished in 3:08.10, cutting two seconds off the previous-best time. The foursome included Schuster, Jeff Hurst, Adams and Gatley.
