Sy, Yarger, Wells, Adams Win Consolation Finals at MAC Meet

Men's swimmers remain fifth after two days of competition

OXFORD, OH – University at Buffalo swimmers won four consolation championships on Friday night as the second day of the Mid-American Conference Championships concluded at Miami University’s Corwin Nixon Aquatics Center.

Senior Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) won the 400-yard individual medley consolation with a season-best showing in the finals race. Sy turned in a 4:07.06, cutting his previous best by more than four seconds and touching out second-place finisher Luke Herlehy of Ohio University by three seconds.

Aside from Sy, the Bulls had four other finishers in the consolation race. Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was third in the race (11th overall) in 4:12.42. Erik Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took fifth in the race and 13th overall in 4:17.26. Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was sixth (14th overall) in 4:23.72, after posting a lifetime-best 4:21.79 in the preliminary round. Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) took eighth and 16th overall in 4:24.79.

UB senior Jon Yarger (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) took the 200-yard freestyle consolation in a lifetime-best 1:42.72. Yarger had qualified ninth overall in the afternoon preliminaries, posting a then-season-best time of 1:43.97. In his two races on Friday, Yarger sliced a second and a half off his previous season-best in the event, set at Akron’s Zippy Invitational in December. This was Yarger’s second consolation championship in his career, after posting the consolation title in the 500-yard freestyle at last season’s meet at Eastern Michigan.

Senior Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) won the consolation final in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.15. It was the third consecutive year that Wells has won the event’s consolation final at the MAC Championships.

Sophomore Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) took the 100-yard backstroke consolation final in 52.75 as three UB swimmers competed in the race. Evan McCormack (Webster, NY/Webster) and Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy) joined Adams in the consolation race. McCormack took fourth in the race and 12th overall in 54.26 while Bessel was fifth (13th overall) in 54.70. McCormack had turned in a lifetime-best 53.36 clocking in the preliminary round.

Yarger, Sy, Jeff Hurst and McCormack made up the fourth-place 800-yard freestyle relay finishing in a season-best 6:57.72. UB’s 200-yard medley relay of Bessel, Wells, Gatley and Yarger finished fifth in 1:37.00.

UB had three consolation finalists in the 100-yard butterfly. Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was the top finisher for the Bulls with a 52.47 showing to finish fifth in the race and 13th overall. Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Fotis Bardis (Kisissia Athens, Greece/Third Lyceum of Kisissia) posted season-best times in the preliminaries. Moessinger improved on his afternoon time with a 52.94 finish for seventh in the race and 15th overall while Bardis, who turned in a season-best 53.76 in the qualifying heats finished eighth (16th overall) in 54.76.

After two days, the Bulls remain in fifth place with 169 points. Defending champion Eastern Michigan leads with 646 points, followed by Miami (505), Ball State (372), Ohio University (310) and UB in the five-team meet. Competition concludes on Saturday.
