Day Two of Diving Championships Complete
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Both of the University at Buffalo’s divers reached the finals of their respective events for the second consecutive day as Saturday’s competition concluded at the 2007 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. Women’s freshman Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) scored a fourth-place finish in the one-meter competition. Carpenter finished with a total of 505.20 points as Drexel’s Kate Hynes won the event with a total of 527.60 points. Harvard’s Samantha Papadakis (514.70) and Penn State’s Kimberlee Peifer (509.75) finished second and third, respectively. Carpenter tallied 250.50 points in the preliminary round of dives to place third behind Papadakis and Peifer and a quarter-point ahead of Hynes. Carpenter, an All-MAC Second Team honoree, placed 11th on the three-meter board on Friday.
Men’s freshman Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) finished 14th on the three-meter board on Saturday with a total of 567.35 points. LaSalle’s Karo Isajan scored the victory with a total score of 735.55 points. McDowell, who placed eighth in the men’s one-meter springboard on Friday moved into the finals after scoring 263.30 points in the preliminaries to place 17th overall. McDowell also earned All-MAC Second Team honors at the league meet in Buffalo last week. The top 18 divers in each event move into the finals. A total of 27 men and 33 women competed on Saturday. The zone championships are being held in five geographic regions this weekend with slots available in the upcoming NCAA Championships to the top finishers in each region.
