Bulls Remain Fifth at MAC Swim Finals
Junior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) reached the championship final of the 100-yard backstroke on Friday. Adams turned in a preliminary time of 52.90 to make the eight-man championship field. He lowered his preliminary time in the final round to 52.86, tying his season-best mark and finishing seventh overall. UB's two other backstrokers Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy) and Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) raced in the consolation final of the 100-yard event. Bessel finished sixth in the race, 14th overall, in 53.88 with Shi placing seventh in the race, 15th overall, in 54.41. The night opened with the Bulls posting a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. UB turned in a 1:38.37 clocking, bettering the 1:38.57 time that they posted at last weekend's ECAC Championships. UB's foursome included Bessel in the backstroke, Leandro Souza (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Missouri State) at breaststroke, Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) at butterfly and Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) as the freestyle anchor. UB also scored a pair of consolation finalists in three additional individual events on Friday. In the 400-yard individual medley, Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) finished 14th overall in 4:10.39 with his brother Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) posted a 4:17.41 clocking to place 15th overall. Schuster and Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) reached the consolation final in the 100-yard butterfly. Schuster finished 13th in 52.28 after posting a season-best 51.86 in the heats earlier in the day. Moessinger, meanwhile, a lifetime-best in the finals with a 52.47 clocking to finish 14th. Gatley finished 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.71 while Dave Harris (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) posted a season-best time of 1:50.14 to place 15th. Souza was 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.90. The Bulls also posted a fifth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay final at 6:58.50 to conclude the night. The foursome consisted of Gatley, Jeff Hurst, Adams and Schuster. Freshman Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) reached Saturday's three-meter diving finals as the preliminary round was held on Friday. Lynch, who finished fourth on the one-meter board on Thursday, turned in a six-dive total of 310.90, second to Eastern Michigan's Josh Olson (314.55). Competition concludes Saturday with the preliminary races starting at noon and the championship finals at 7:00 pm. The All-MAC team and specialty awards will be announced following the conclusion of Saturday's competition. Team scores: Miami (OH) 580.5, Eastern Michigan 569, Ohio 369.5, Ball State 315, UB 178. |
