UB Men's Swimmers Open MAC Meet
OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo opened the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at Miami University's Corwin Nixon Aquatics Center. After the first night of competition, the Bulls are fifth among the five schools with 45 points. Eastern Michigan leads with 289 points, followed by Miami (240), Ball State (179) and Ohio University (157). Senior Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) was the lone Bull to compete in an individual championship final on Thursday. Sy finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.26. He reached the championship final by qualifying eighth in the preliminary heats with a 4:38.18 clocking, slicing eight seconds off his season-best mark. Two Bulls competed in the consolation race of the 200-yard individual medley. Erik Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport) finished fifth in the race and 13th overall in 1:57.13 while Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was seventh in the consolation and 15th overall in 1:57.68. The Bulls ended Thursday's competition with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne), Sy and Hurst finished in a season-best 3:29.12. Competition continues through Saturday. |
