ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo opened the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in fifth place at the five-team meet with 81 points after the first six events. Eastern Michigan, champion of 25 of the last 29 meets, holds a slight lead over Miami (283-270) for the top spot, followed by Ball State (159), Ohio (145) and UB (81).

Freshman diver Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) placed fourth in the one-meter competition on Thursday night for UB's highest finish of the night. Lynch scored 287.50 points in the six-dive championship round after scoring a total of 281.60 in the afternoon's preliminary round. He just missed scoring a third-place finish by three-tenths of a point as Ball State's Zach Whitaker took the spot. Miami freshman Chris Heaton won the event with a total of 333.50 points.

Both of UB's relay teams finished fifth in the five-team finals on Thursday night. The Bulls opened the scoring in the meet's first event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a season-best clocking of 1:26.43. The UB foursome included Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Leandro Souza (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Missouri State). The 400-yard medley relay team of Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy), Souza, Schuster and Hurst finished fifth in 3:34.30.

Individually, Hurst finished 11th overall, third in the consolation final, of the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.25. Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) placed 13th overall, fifth in the consolation final, in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.64.

Friday's preliminary races begin at noon at the Ohio Aquatic Center with the finals getting underway at 7:00 pm. Competition concludes on Saturday.
