UB Men Place Ninth at ECAC FinalsPITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo's men's swimming and diving squad finished ninth among 30 scoring teams Saturday night at the ECAC Championships in Pittsburgh. The Bulls scored 142 points in the three-day meet finishing just behind eighth-place Westminster's 142 points. Maryland-Baltimore County won the championship for the fifth straight year collecting 670 points to second-place Marist's 420.
Freshman Aviv Oren (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel/Makif A') won the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke in a lifetime-best time of 2:08.90. Another of the Bulls' highly-touted freshmen, Evan McCormack (Webster, NY/Webster) also turned in a lifetime best with his 15th-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.88. Teammates Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) and Tony Lizauckas (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) placed 17th and 20th in the preliminaries, respectively.
Over the three-day meet, the Bulls put together 18 lifetime bests bringing the team total to 53 for the 2001-02 season. Head coach Budd Termin said, "We used the ECAC as a tuneup. We broke through with quite a few lifetime bests." UB remains in the thick of post-season competition with next weekend's Mid-American Conference Championships in Athens, OH. Capping off his team's success at the ECAC's Termin remarked, "The team overall preformed pretty well, but we're going to have to swim a lot harder next week at the Mid-American Conference Championships." The three-day MAC meet opens on Thursday. |
