Patrick Lee Wins ECAC Diving Title

UB men complete ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships in sixth place

PITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team completed the ECAC Championships on Sunday night with a sixth-place overall finish and a victory in the one-meter diving competition. The Bulls picked up 265 points among the 29 schools that scored in the meet. Johns Hopkins University won the men's team title with 437.50.

UB's Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) became an ECAC champion with his record-setting victory on the one-meter diving board. Lee scored a six-dive total of 314.10 points, surpassing the record of 308.93 points that he had set in 2002. Lee also finished third in the three-meter competition earlier in the week at 434.55 points. Teammate Jim Taravella (Hamburg, NY/Orchard Park) also made the championship field, scoring an eighth-place finish at 211.05 points.

Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) also scored in the championship round with his fifth-place performance in the 200 butterfly. Sy touched the wall in 1:53.65. He had finished fourth in the 400 individual medley earlier in the meet.

The Bulls' 400 freestyle relay team scored a seventh-place finish in 3:09.93. The foursome consisted of Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), Ryan Cahill (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) and Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).

Two other Bulls, Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) and Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) scored in the consolation races of their events. Adams turned in a 1:56.30 showing in the 200 backstroke for 11th place, while Wells finished 13th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.34.

Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) finished 19th in the 1,650 freestyle in 16:55.32.

The Bulls travel to Ypsilanti, MI for the Mid-American Conference Championships starting on Thursday.
