Richard Shi Named to Academic All-MAC Team
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's swimmer Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) was one of 13 individuals named to the 2007 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Team, the league announced from its headquarters in Cleveland this morning. Shi, a sophomore biomedical pharmacology major with a 3.70 grade point average, helped the Bulls to their best-ever finish at the MAC Championships held last weekend at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium. Shi finished fifth in the consolation final of the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.37 and seventh in the consolation final of the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.45). He posted a lifetime-best in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.92) to reach the consolation race. Shi was also a member of UB's three freestyle relay teams, helping the Bulls to season-best times in the 400-yard (3:10.43) and 800-yard (6:50.56) events. He set season-best times at December's Akron SummaCare Invitational in both the 100-yard (54.41) and 200-yard (1:56.70) backstrokes. The UB men finished fourth in the MAC Championships with a total of 378 points, their highest total since joining the league in 1998. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. The Academic All-MAC team is voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives. The total of number of honorees is set for a specific sport or 33 percent of all nominees, whichever is greater. |
