Bulls Return to Top 10 at ECAC Meet

It was a successful ECAC Championship meet for the UB swimming and diving program as the Bulls returned to the top 10 after last season’s stumble to place eighth in a field of 19 scoring teams. UB scored 183 points in the three-day meet while Johns Hopkins won the team title with 541 points. The Bulls have reached the top 10 in nine of the last 10 years.

Freshman Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) gave the Bulls their biggest results at the ECAC meet as he captured both diving events over the weekend and earned the ECAC’s Diver of the Year award. Lynch began the meet on Friday with a UB record to win the three-meter title. Lynch turned in a six-dive total of 333.40 points in the final round to eclipse Justin Monin's 328.05 mark set in 1995 and also had Friday's highest preliminary point total with 274.95 points. On Sunday, Lynch posted a six-dive total of 284.00 points to capture the one-meter diving crown. He entered the final round after posting the highest point total (286.75) in the preliminaries earlier in the day. Lynch is the first UB diver since Patrick Lee in 2004 to earn an ECAC diving title.

Relayers Reach Championship Finals in Four of Five Races

The Bulls were buoyed in the standings by their relay teams as UB reached the championship final in four of the five races. UB’s highest finish came on Saturday as the 800-yard freestyle relay team placed fifth. UB's foursome of Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) and Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) posted a season-best time for the Bulls in 6:56.21, slicing three seconds off the previous best set at Akron's SummaCare Invitational in December. UB's 400-yard freestyle relay squad turned in the fifth-best qualifying time of the preliminaries at 3:11.93 on Sunday and actually improved on that mark in the finals but finished lower in the championship race as Adams, Schuster, Gatley and Hurst took seventh in 3:10.16. On Friday night, the 400-yard medley also finished seventh in 3:35.01. The time was a season-best for the Bulls in the event. Adams led off the backstroke leg of the race with Leandro Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Missouri State) (breaststroke), Schuster (butterfly) and Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (freestyle) following in the water. UB's 200-yard medley relay squad of Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy), Gatley and Schuster posted a season-best mark of 1:38.57 in the preliminary heat to reach the championship final, where they finished eighth in 1:38.77.

Adams Reaches Freestyle Distance Championship Race

Luke Adams set a lifetime-best in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday. Adams posted a 4:39.47 clocking in the preliminary round, lowering his previous best by nearly five seconds. In the finals, he finished sixth overall with a time of 4:39.65. Adams also posted a second lifetime-best in the meet with a 47.65 clocking in the opening leg of 400-yard freestyle relay. He posted a season-best time of 1:53.75 in Sunday’s preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing 13th overall, fifth in the consolation final, in 1:55.70.

Six More Lifetime-Bests Over the Weekend

The Bulls put together six more lifetime-best marks over the weekend, bringing the season total to 39.

On Sunday, Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) turned in a lifetime-best time of 1:56.86 in the opening heats of the 200-yard butterfly. Kevin Gatley also scored a lifetime-best in the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries of 1:44.50. Adams posted two bests with his 500-yard freestyle prelim (4:39.47) and opening split of the 400-yard freestyle relay (47.65 for his 100-yard swim). Jeff Hurst earned a lifetime-best with his opening split in the 800-freestyle relay (1:43.11 for his 200-yard swim). Cassidy Lynch’s three-meter diving total of 333.40 points was both a lifetime-best for the freshman, it was also a UB school record. Head coach Budd Termin was pleased with his team's results over the three-day meet. "The goal is to come down and either swim right at or surpass our lifetime bests and we did both of those," he said. "It's a perfect tuneup for us because the competition is every bit as strong as in the MAC Championships. Everyone really stepped up and competed well. We're in a good position to try and improve on every time we did this week."
