PITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo men's swimming team finished the ECAC Championships in 12th place among 24 scoring teams, picking up strong performances in the final two days of competition. The Bulls posted 82.50 points in the three-day meet after starting the meet slow with just 10 points after the first day at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.

UB sophomore Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) registered a pair of career-best swims in his races to lead the Bulls over the weekend. Adams finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.53 on Saturday, after turning in a career-best 52.32 in the qualifying heats. He came back Sunday with another sixth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.25, after lowering his career-best in the event during the preliminaries with a 1:52.69 clocking.

Senior Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) posted the highest finish at the meet as he tied for second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Wells turned in a career-best 57.89 in the finals to tie UMBC freshman Scott Auchter for second place. Pittsburgh's Dave Montgomery won the championship final in 57.13.

Senior Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) scored points in a pair of consolation races. He finished 15th overall in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:17.65 clocking and later turned in another 15th-place performance with his 1:56.55 finish in the 200-yard butterfly.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy), Wells, Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Erik Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport) turned in a season-best performance in its race. The foursome finished in 10th place in 1:36.12, slicing six-tenths of a second off the previous top mark of the season.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team earned an 11th-place finish in its race in 7:05.07. The team included Jon Yarger (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley), Adams, Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) and Evan McCormack (Webster, NY/Webster).

Wells and Yarger narrowly missed scoring additional points finishing 17th in their qualifying races, unable to crack the finals lineup. Wells turned in a season-best performance in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.09, but missed the 16th-place spot by a hundredth of a second. Yarger finished his 200-yard freestyle heat in 1:44.69, just five-hundredths of a second out of reaching the finals.

The Bulls now take their marks into the Mid-American Conference Championships. The three-day meet at Miami's Corwin Nixon Aquatics Center begins on Thursday.
