Regular Season Ends With Losses at Bonaventure
The UB men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded their regular season schedules on Wednesday, February 6 with losses to regional rival St. Bonaventure in a pair of close meets. The men fell, 139-100, while the women were defeated, 125-112.
Pick Up a Two-by-Four
Jessie Koltz | In the St. Bonaventure meet, four Bulls scored two victories each. For the women, freshman Jesse Koltz (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Valley) won the sprint freestyle events for the Bulls. Koltz won the 50-yard race in 24.61. She later completed the sweep with a win in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.53. Sophomore Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) swept the diving events for the Bulls. Carpenter won the one-meter competition with a total score of 277.80 points for six dives. She later took the three-meter event with 286.81 points.
Connor Vander Zalm | On the men’s side, sophomores Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) scored two victories apiece. Vander Zalm swept the distance freestyle races as he opened with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:55.15 and followed with a win in the 500-yard freestyle race in 4:55.35. McDowell swept both diving competitions. McDowell began the meet with a victory on the three-meter springboard with a six-dive total of 364.85 points. McDowell also won the one-meter event with a total of 286.87 points.
It’s Championship Time
With the regular season concluded, the Bulls will now focus on the postseason, starting with the Mid-American Conference Championships. The UB women host the four-day MAC Championships, starting February 20. The Bulls finished eighth at last year’s meet, but appear much stronger this year based on their regular season performances and could move up in the standings. Eastern Michigan returns to Buffalo as the defending league champion.
For the men, the four men’s MAC programs (UB, Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Miami) will travel to Nashville, TN on February 27 for a combined championship with the Sun Belt Conference. Six schools (Western Kentucky, Denver, Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Evansville and Florida Atlantic) compose the Sun Belt for swimming and diving.
