Mark Sy Selected As MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week
BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo men's swimmer Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Scholar Athlete of the Week. The league announced the award in Cleveland Thursday morning. Sy, a senior computer engineering major with a 3.573 grade point average, earned the award after posting a pair of victories in UB's 154-83 men's swimming loss to St. Bonaventure on February 5. Sy picked up his first win of the meet in the grueling 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:48.37, holding off a hard charge from St. Bonaventure's Scott Jordan, who finished second in 9:49.22. Sy also rallied to win his specialty event, the 200-yard butterfly, touching out the Bonnies' Roman Margulis by three-hundredths of a second. Sy, who trailed Margulis the entire race, reached the wall first in 1:54.85 to Margulis' 1:54.88. This is the third consecutive week that a UB student-athlete has earned the honor. Track and field senior Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) picked up the women's award on January 25 and men's basketball senior Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) was selected as the men's winner on February 1. UB athletes have been selected for the honor eight times this season. Only Eastern Michigan (nine) has had more honorees than the Bulls in the 2004-05 school year. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to both a MAC male and
female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during
that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty
athletic representatives. |
