Michael McDowell Wins Weekly MAC Award
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo freshman diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Swimmer of the Week. The league announced the award from its headquarters in Cleveland on Wednesday. McDowell set a new school record on the one-meter springboard with a six-dive total of 323.77 points in UB's 129-114 loss to Western New York rival St. Bonavenure on February 1. McDowell won the competition by 80 points over the second-place finisher, C.J. Maurer of St. Bonaventure. McDowell's point total bettered the previous mark of 314.10 set in 2004 by Patrick Lee and tied on November 17, 2006 by McDowell against Canisius. McDowell also won the three-meter event with a total score of 287.33 to sweep both diving competitions for the Bulls in their final regular season meet of the year. McDowell is the third UB athlete to earn the league's Swimmer of the Week award. Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) won the award on October 31 while Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket) netted the honor on November 21. All three of UB's winners are from the freshman class that head coach Budd Termin brought to Buffalo over the summer. UB is tied for first among the five MAC swim programs with three weekly winners along with Miami (OH). The Bulls host the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships on February 22-24 at Alumni Arena Natatorium in their next competition. |
