BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team opened the first day of the UB Invitational with a 35-point lead over second-place St. Bonaventure in the four-team meet at Alumni Arena Natatorium. UB (823 points) used three first-place finishes and several second- and third-place marks in the timed final races to grab the lead over Bonnies (788). Niagara is third at 184 while Colgate, which only entered divers, is fourth with 14 points.

Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) picked up an individual win and a relay victory to lead the Bulls in Saturday's events. Sy led the Bulls to the top three spots in the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 1:55.89. Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) placed second in 1:58.41 and Erik Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was third in 1:59.28. Sy also swam the opening leg of the Bulls' winning 800 freestyle relay squad (7:07.34) along with Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), Hurst and Ryan Cahill (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima).

UB assured itself of first-place in the team standings thanks to its top four showings in the 400 individual medley. Hurst touched the wall first in 4:12.38, followed by Schwarz in 4:15.10, Sy in 4:20.57 and Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) in fourth in 4:22.53.

The final session will be tomorrow starting at 10 am. A complete list of winners is included below.
