Bulls Fall to Bonnies in Final Events to End Regular Season

UB’s men’s swimming and diving team finished the regular season on Thursday night with a 129-114 loss to Western New York rival St. Bonaventure. The Bulls finish the regular season with a 3-4 overall mark. The meet stayed tight throughout with UB holding a 103-102 lead heading into the final two events. However, St. Bonaventure's Mariusz Michalik won the 200-yard breaststroke and the foursome of Dan Freeland, Ceyhan Guler, Aroldo Nery and Chris Ekimoff took the 400-yard freestyle relay to close the meet and provide the margin of victory for the Bonnies. This was the second time this season that the meet came down to the wire with the final event being the deciding factor. UB lost a 124-117 decision to Ohio on January 13 as the Bobcats won the final relay.

Freshman diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) had a standout performance in UB’s meet against St. Bonaventure. McDowell set a new school record on the one-meter springboard with a six-dive total of 323.77 points to win the competition by 80 points over the second-place finisher, St. Bonaventure's C.J. Maurer. His point total bettered the previous mark of 314.10 set in 2004 by Patrick Lee and tied on November 17, 2006 by McDowell against Canisius. McDowell also won the three-meter event with a total score of 287.33.

Adams Takes Pair in Senior Finale

Senior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), swimming in his final home dual meet for the Bulls, won two events. Adams took the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:44.19. He later won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.24. Adams has set season-best times in the 200-yard freestyle in the last three meets. He is also among the Mid-American Conference’s top 10 swimmers in four events this season, including the highest ranking of fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.30). Adams and fellow senior Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) were honored prior to the meet.

Woster Hangs on to Win Butterfly Race

Freshman Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole) won the 200-yard butterfly by the slimmest of margins for the Bulls against the Bonnies. He touched out St. Bonaventure's Roman Margulis by six-hundredths of a second as Woster held onto the advantage after leading by two seconds heading into the final 50 yards. Woster won the race in 1:56.39 to Margulis’ 1:56.45. Woster also set a lifetime-best in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.59.

ECACs and MACs Highlight the Postseason Schedule

With the regular season now concluded, the Bulls gear up for their usual pair of postseason meets. The championship season begins on February 16 as the Bulls travel to Cambridge, MA for the ECAC Championships. UB reached the top 10 for the ninth time in 10 seasons with their eighth-place finish at last season’s meet in Pittsburgh. UB hosts the MAC Championships at Alumni Arena Natatorium February 22-24.
