Bulls Defeated by Strong Eastern Michigan Squad

The University at Buffalo men’s swimming and diving team dropped its final Mid-American Conference meet of the season, Saturday afternoon, with a 136-93 loss to league power Eastern Michigan at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls are now 3-3 overall and conclude the league slate with a 1-3 mark. The Eagles improved to 7-1 and remained unbeaten in league competition at 3-0. Eastern Michigan has not lost a MAC regular season meet since the 1997-98 campaign and would look to be the favorite when the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships come to Alumni Arena Natatorium on February 22.

The Bulls scored four event victories against Eastern Michigan, highlighted by freshman Michael McDowell’s (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) sweep of the diving competitions. McDowell scored a six-dive point total of 310.13 to easily capture the one-meter springboard event. He later went on to take the three-meter event with a six-dive total of 297.08 points, 1.35 points ahead of EMU’s Matt Guinen, who exhibitioned the event. UB’s other diver on Saturday, freshman Dominic LaForest (Philadelphia, NY/Indian River) established a season-best performance on the one-meter board with 235.72 points to finish fifth.

Freshman Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) claimed a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke. The freshman set a lifetime-best in the race with his 2:09.75 clocking on Saturday, cutting his previous best by .26 seconds. It was the second time this season that Song had established a new lifetime-best in the event. He set the previous best of 2:10.01 at the Akron SummaCare Invitational in December.

Relayers Score Victory

The Bulls also took a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the meet’s final event. Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch), Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole) and Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) touched the wall in 1:34.12.

Senior Night as St. Bonaventure Comes to Town

The Bulls conclude the regular season on Thursday, February 1 when they host local rival St. Bonaventure. The meet starts at 6:00 pm and the UB senior class of Luke Adams and Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) will be honored prior to the meet. From there, the championship season begins as the Bulls travel to Cambridge, MA for the ECAC Championships, starting on February 16. UB hosts the MAC Championships at Alumni Arena Natatorium February 22-24.
