Women Down Akron, Men Fall to Miami

The University at Buffalo’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split up over the weekend with mixed results. On Friday, the UB women traveled to Mid-American Conference rival Akron, where they defeated the Zips, 164-135. However, the UB men couldn’t complete the weekend sweep as they fell to Miami (OH) on Saturday, 138-105, during Senior Day.

The Bulls won 10 of 16 events against Akron on Friday with three individuals winning two events apiece. Freshman Jordan Deren (Lackawanna, NY/Nardin Academy) won the distance freestyle races as she set a season-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.08. She also took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.03. Sophomore Ashley Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) swept the breaststroke events. Schaffert won the 100-yard event in 1:06.51 and also took the 200-yard race in 2:25.94. Sophomore Andrea Lehner (Lockport, NY/Orchard Park) won two events at the 100-yard distance with victories in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.44 as well as the 100-yard freestyle in 52.06. Lehner and Schaffert were also part of the winning 200-yard medley relay squad, while Lehner and Deren made up half of the victorious 400-yard freestyle foursome.

In the men’s meet against Miami, several events proved to have close finishes as the meet could have swung either way. In the opening event, the 400-yard medley relay, anchor Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch) caught Miami's final swimmer within the final 10 yards and touched the wall ahead of his opponent by two-tenths of a second as the UB foursome of Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket), Jordan Matthews (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole) and Ruske finished in a season-best 3:31.56. Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) fell just short in the 1,000-yard freestyle finishing second to Darin Smith by two-hundredths of a second. Vander Zalm did set a season-best mark with his 9:42.84 clocking. Ruske also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle as Ryan McHugh won the race by nine-hundredths of a second.
