Swimmers Drop Meet at Miami

Despite winning six of 13 events on the afternoon, the University at Buffalo men’s swimming and diving team dropped its second straight Mid-American Conference meet as the Bulls were downed by defending MAC champion Miami (OH), 142-98, at the Corwin Nixon Natatorium. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in MAC action.

McDowell Sweeps Diving Events

Freshman Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) led the Bulls with two individual victories against Miami. McDowell took the one-meter diving event with a score of 287.02 and won the three-meter board event with a score of 292.65. Teammate Dominic LaForest (Philadelphia, NY/Indian River) posted a season-best effort on the three-meter board. LaForest totalled 214.20 points for his six-dive sequence against the RedHawks, finishing fourth overall.

Relayers Score Opening Victory

UB’s 400-yard medley relay team of Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario), Jordan Matthews (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch/Metro State) opened the meet against Miami with a strong performance, to take an early 11-4 lead after the first event. The foursome finished in a time of 3:32.87, more than four seconds ahead of Miami’s entry. UB’s top time in the event is 3:30.57, set at December’s Akron SummaCare Invitational.

Vander Zalm and Adams Go Long Distance

Freshman Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) scored a victory for the Bulls in the meet’s second event, the 1,000-yard freestyle. Vander Zalm, finished in 9:54.16, four seconds ahead of Miami’s Drew Bollea. Vander Zalm posted a lifetime best in the event last month at the Akron SummaCare meet with a 9:44.93 clocking.

In the 500-yard freestyle senior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) and Vander Zalm turned in a one-two finish, as Adams won the event in 4:42.75 while Vander Zalm touched the wall second in a time of 4:48.33. Both swimmers set lifetime-bests in the event at the Akron SummaCare Invitional. Adams posted the team’s best time in the event this season with a 4:38.92 showing while Vander Zalm turned in a 4:39.04 time.

Eagles Come to Town

The Bulls return to the water on Saturday, January 27 with a dual meet against MAC foe Eastern Michigan. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 pm in UB’s Alumni Arena and will be run in conjunction with the UB women’s meet against the Eagles.
