RedHawks Cruise Past Bulls, 142-98OXFORD, OH- Despite winning six of 13 events on the afternoon, the University at Buffalo men’s swimming and diving team dropped its second Mid-American Conference dual meet of the season on Friday afternoon, falling to the Miami (OH) University RedHawks in Oxford, 142-98. With the setback, the Bulls fall to 1-2 in MAC competition, while the defending MAC champion RedHawks improve to 2-0 in the MAC.
Freshman Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) led the Bulls with two individual victories on the afternoon. McDowell took the one-meter diving event with a score of 287.02 and won the three-meter board event with a score of 292.65.
The Bulls sailed out to a promising start, inking wins in the first two events of the meet. The 400-yard medley relay team of Andrew Tamchyna (Newmarket, Ontario), Jordan Matthews (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Kevin Schuster (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch/Metro State) touched the wall first in a time of 3:32.87 while Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) followed with an individual victory of his own in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 9:54.16.
In the 500-yard freestyle senior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) and Vander Zalm turned in a one-two finish, as Adams won the event in 4:42.75 while Vander Zalm touched the wall second in a time of 4:48.33. Additionally, rookie Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) won the 200-yard breaststroke, inking a time of 2:10.67. The Bulls return to the water on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a dual meet against MAC foe Eastern Michigan. The meet is scheduled for 1:00 pm in UB’s Alumni Arena. |
