McDowell Earns MAC Weekly Award
BUFFALO, NY – For the third time this season, University at Buffalo sophomore diver Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) has been selected as the Mid-American Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Week. The league announced its selection late Tuesday at its headquarters in Cleveland. McDowell broke his own UB records in both the one- and three-meter diving events at a dual meet against Binghamton on January 11. In the one-meter competition, McDowell scored 344.79 points for six dives to easily surpass his previous best of 325.88 set in October in a dual meet against Duquesne. McDowell also ran away with the three-meter record in the victory as he scored 365.40 points to better the 356.92 he posted in the Duquesne meet. McDowell won the one-meter event by more than 70 points and the three-meter competition by nearly 90 points over the second-place finisher, Binghamton’s Ryan Graham. This is the third time that McDowell has been recognized by the MAC as its top male athlete. He also took the award on October 24, following his record setting performances against Duquense, and again on December 10 when he broke a pair of meet records at Akron's Zippy Invitational. The Bulls have won five Men's Swimmer of the Week awards this season with Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch) winning the honor once apiece. Combined with the women's team, UB swimmers have picked up the MAC's top swimmer award eight times this season. The Bulls take on local rival Niagara on Saturday, January 19 in their next competition. |
