Bulls Bested By Bonnies

UB men's swim team falls to St. Bonaventure, 146.50-96.50

BUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team dropped a 146.50-96.50 decision to Western New York rival St. Bonaventure on Thursday afternoon at the Alumni Arena Natatorium. The loss snaps the Bulls' two-meet winning streak and drops their record to 2-3 while the Bonnies improve to 4-2.

St. Bonaventure's speed and team depth proved difficult for the Bulls to overcome as the Bonnies won nine of 13 events. With more swimmers entered in each event than the Bulls, St. Bonaventure was able to score more third- and fourth-place entrants, which proved to be the difference in the meet.

Freshman diver Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) registered two victories for the Bulls as he swept the one- and three-meter competitions. Lee scored 258.68 points on the one-meter board to edge out second-place Randy Kozlowski of St. Bonaventure (248.93) by less than 10 points. Lee also took the three-meter event with a total of 285.90 points.

UB sophomore Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward) won the 1000 freestyle in 9:53.81 and finished second in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.86. Freshman Dave Richards (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) took the 200 backstroke in a season-best 1:57.02 for the Bulls.

St. Bonaventure had three double-winners on the afternoon. Seth Johnson won both sprint freestyle races, taking the 50 in 21.89 and the 100 in 48.41. Borut Poje won the 200 freestyle (1:42.07) and 200 butterfly (1:54.15). Mike Petock took the 200 IM (1:57.69) and 500 freestyle (4:47.12). Adrian Blaszczak won the 200 breaststroke for the Bonnies in 2:06.90.

The Bonnies also won both relay events. The team of Morgan Hagerman, Kyle Bull, Can Yildizli and Nick Bedward won the 400 free relay in 3:15.20. Luke Kneeland, Matt Cormier, Patrick Doret and Johnson won the 400 medley relay in 3:31.99.

UB next hits the road with a meet on Friday, Jan. 31 against Toledo.
