Bulls Fall to Cardinals in MAC Meet
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo's men's swimming team dropped a 156-81 decision to Ball State in Mid-American Conference action at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls (2-2 overall, 1-2 MAC) picked up four victories on the afternoon with Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) winning a pair of events. Sy won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:44.90, holding off Ball State's Jim Lullo (9:45.33), who closed quickly in the final 15 yards. Sy also won his specialty event, the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.18, a half-second ahead of Ball State's Ryan Bowman (1:55.72). Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), the reigning MAC Men's Swimmer of the Week, earned a win in the 200-yard individual medley. Hurst used a strong kick in the last stroke of the medley, the freestyle, to overtake Ball State's Ritchie Caudill and touch the wall first in 1:57.00. Caudill finished in 1:57.24. Backstroker Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) was also victorious in his specialty race. Adams cruised to a win in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.57. Ball State's Jeff Sheets (1:58.03) and Adam Konopka (1:58.18) were second and third, respectively, behind Adams by more than two and a half seconds. Ball State (1-1 overall, 1-1 MAC) picked up two wins from Kurtis Leer in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Leer, the MAC Men's Swimmer of the Week two times this season, won the 100 in 47.07 and the 200 in 1:43.12. UB travels to Niagara for a non-conference meet on Wednesday, January 19 starting at 6:00 pm. |
