Squads Split With Bearcats; Women Fall to Rockets

The University at Buffalo swimming and diving teams had a busy weekend to start the second semester as the teams traveled to Binghamton for a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon. The teams split their meets with the Bearcats as the women defeated BU, 140-99, while the men fell, 144-98. On Saturday, the women’s team hosted Mid-American Conference rival Toledo, falling to the Rockets by a 202-97 margin.

For the second time this season, sophomore Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta) set UB records in both the one- and three-meter diving events at the Binghamton meet. In the one-meter competition, McDowell scored 344.79 points for six dives to easily surpass his previous best of 325.88 set in October in a dual meet against Duquesne. McDowell also ran away with the three-meter record in the victory as he scored 365.40 points to better the 356.92 he posted in the Duquesne meet. McDowell won Friday’s one-meter event by more than 70 points and the three-meter competition by nearly 90 points over the second-place finisher, Binghamton’s Ryan Graham.

In Saturday’s meet against Toledo, sophomore Andrea Lehner (Lockport, NY/Orchard Park) broke the UB record in winning the 200-yard backstroke. Lehner turned in a time of 2:01.59, obliterating the old mark of 2:04.38 set by Alexandra Barerra in the 1995 season. Lehner led throughout the race but needed the record pace to win the event as second-place finisher Meghan Reissig of Toledo also posted a time faster than the old UB record at 2:03.16. The backstroke mark is the fourth individual record broken by Lehner, who joined the Bulls this season after competiting at Maryland last year. Lehner, who sat out the Binghamton meet on Friday due to illness, also won Saturday’s 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.60, holding off Toledo's Jacy Dyer, who finished second in 1:51.78.

On Saturday, she took the three-meter competition with a six-dive total of 301.15 and finished second to Toledo's Megan McKinley by a point and a half on the one-meter board.
