Sy Wins MAC Awards
BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo swimmer Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) has been selected by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Swimmer of the Week, the league has announced. Sy earned the recognition after powering the Bulls to a 134-63 victory over crosstown rival Canisius on January 10. The junior won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races, the first time this season he had been entered in either race. Sy took the 100 distance in 48.62 and the 200 distance in 1:44.15. Both times are the fastest by a Bull this season. He was also part of UB's top finishing 200 freestyle relay squad (1:30.28), swimming the second leg. The Bulls exhibitioned the event, the final event of the meet, after having clinched the team victory. Earlier this season, Sy twice set the UB 200 butterfly record, breaking the previous mark set in 1992 by Eric Balzhiser. Set broke Balzhiser's mark in the season-opener against Miami (OH) in 1:52.56. He then lowered the mark to 1:52.39 at the Purdue Invitational on November 23. Aside from his record-setting butterfly mark and the top 100 and 200 freestyle swims against Canisius, Sy also has turned in the top UB time this season in both the 500 (4:38.01) and 1000 freestyles (9:36.28). Additionally, Sy was also selected as the league's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Sy holds a 3.49 GPA in computer engineering. The Bulls (2-1 overall, 1-1 MAC) host Niagara on Thursday, January 15 at 4 pm. UB then
hits the road for a Saturday meeting against league-rival Ball State. |
