Bulls Drown Golden Griffins, 132-61

UB men's swimmers win all 11 events to sweep Canisius

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's swim team won all 11 events en route to a 132-61 victory over Canisius College Saturday afternoon at UB's Alumni Arena Natatorium. With the victory, the Bulls improved to 2-1 overall while dropping the Golden Griffins to 0-7.

Senior Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and junior Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Bulls on Saturday with two individual victories and were also on winning relay teams.

Hurst won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.01 and later scored a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.55. He also swam the anchor leg of UB's victorious 400-yard medley relay, touching the wall in 3:37.17. Joining Hurst on the relay team were senior Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS), freshman Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and senior Fotis Bardis (Kisissia Athens, Greece/Third Lyceum of Kisissia).

Gatley emerged victorious in a pair of freestyle races, taking the 200-yard distance in 1:47.92 and the 100-yard event in 49.25. He also swam the opening leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. Gatley was followed into the water by sophomore Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford), freshman Brian Page (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) and junior Sean Reilley (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent). The UB foursome finished in 3:28.15.

Other individual winners for the Bulls included Adams in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:05.09), senior Jon Yarger (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.37), sophomore Aaron Moessinger (Elma, NY/Iroquois) in the 100-yard butterfly (54.59), Sy in the 100-yard backstroke (53.29) and senior Evan McCormack (Webster, NY/Webster) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.52).

The Bulls return to Mid-American Conference competition next Saturday when they host Ball State at 1:00 pm.
