Bulls Upset #19 Irish in OT, 3-2Sophomore forward Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) lofted in a header into the right corner of the goal past Notre Dame goalkeeper Greg Velho 9:47 into sudden death overtime to lift the UB Bulls to a 3-2 sudden death overtime win over 19th-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday night (9/13). Butcher finished the game with two goals and an assist to lead the visitors in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. All five of the games' goals were scored in the second half. Freshman Reggie McKnight put the Irish on the scoreboard first when he scored off assists from Stephen Maio and Ryan Turner less than five minutes into the second half. Butcher tied the game for Buffalo at the 56:48 mark as he lofted a shot over the head of Velho who had come out of the goal in an attempt to stop Butcher's shot. Freshman forward Joe Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) was an integeal part of the play as he fed Butcher with a 35-yard pass through several Notre Dame defenders. With less than eight minutes to play in the contest, Sebastian Zawislan (Brampton, ONT/St. Augustine) gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead when he scored from the left corner of the penalty box off a cross from Butcher. Buffalo was at a man disadvantage at that point after Tristan Burton (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) was red-carded at the 72:27 mark. Alan Woods goal at the 86:17 mark sent the game into overtime when he took a McNew pass off a cross from Savarino and headed into the net amongst several Buffalo defenders. Notre Dame outshot Buffalo 15-9 in the game. It was the second loss in three games at home for the Irish who also dropped a 4-0 decision to Indiana on September 2. Butcher continues to be the Bulls' go-to player with seven goals in six games, including two goals in three of UB's last four games. He now has 16 points on the season. The Bulls (3-2-1) will next face Akron University on September 21, before returning home on Wednesday (9/24) to play crosstown rival Canisius at RAC Field at 7:00 pm. Admission is free. |
