UB Men Win Fall Classic

Bulls Win Both Games in Taking Championship

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team took the team championship at the 1999 UB Fall Classic, securing the title with a 3-1 victory over St. Francis, NY. The Bulls had four players named to the All-Tournament team, including defensive and offensive Most Valuable Player awards.

The Bulls got down early as St. Francis, NY, scored in the first six minutes of the game on a goal by Ron Azinge. UB would come back at the 12:51 mark when Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored off a deflection by the goalie to tie that game at 1-1. Late in the first half, Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) stole a pass and defeated the St. Francis defender to score at the 43:36 mark and give UB a 2-1 lead at halftime. Songer would solidify the UB victory by scoring his second goal of the game on a free kick at the 50:58 mark. The Bulls then controlled the game the rest of the way for the 3-1 win and earn the tournament championship.

In the first game of the day, Central Connecticut State defeated the University of Pittsburgh 1-0 on a goal from Jason Butler at the 72:53 mark.

The Bulls placed four members on the All-Tournament team, including defensive MVP Joe Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) and offensive MVP Steve Butcher. Also named to the team from UB were Brian McCallion (Ballston Spa, NY/Shenendehowa) and Tim Songer, who scored three goals in the two games.
