UB Men Win Tournament Opener

Butcher leads Bulls in victory

BUFFALO, NY - The UB men's soccer team controlled most of the game in the opening round of the 1999 UB Fall Classic and defeated Central Connecticut State 4-0. The Bulls were led by Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) who recorded his first goal of the year as well as two assists.

UB got on the board first at the 38:46 mark, as Butcher knocked in a shot from the left side that dribbled into the CCSU net for a 1-0 UB lead. Six minutes into the second half, the Bulls scored again as Butcher played the ball through to Chris Vinci (Buffalo, NY/St. Joesephs) who scored on a great header for 2-0 Bulls lead. UB extended their lead at the 66:10 mark when Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hooked a shot around the CCSU wall on a free kick for his first goal of the season. In the final minute, the Bulls added a late goal as Butcher fed Luke Bakun (Toronto, Ontario/William MacKenzie) for a breakaway goal and the 4-0 final.

UB (1-0-1) outshot Central Connecticut 17-5 and Bulls goalie Justin Deming (Balston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills) recorded his first career shutout.

In the first game of the day, St. Francis, NY, and Pittsburgh battled through a physical game and ended in a 0-0 tie. Pittsburgh outshot St. Francis, NY, 7-2.

In Sunday's games, Pittsburgh will face Central Connecticut State at 11 a.m., and Buffalo will face St. Francis, NY, beginning at 1:30 p.m. A win by the Bulls would give UB the tournament championship.
