UB Drops First Game to Akron

Zips hold on for 1-0 win over Bulls

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team lost their first game of the season to defending Mid-American Conference champion and nationally ranked Akron, falling 1-0 in a close game Sunday afternoon.

The first half was a stalemate as neither team could find the net. The Bulls lone scoring chance in the half came on a shot by Chris Vinci (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) that was saved by Akron goalie Kyle Milligan. UB goalkeeper Justin Deming (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills) made a diving save off an Akron free kick by Tim Cooper to keep the Zips scoreless in the first half.

The Zips finally broke through the Buffalo defense in the second half as Tim Cooper handled a deflection off a UB defender and knocked it in the back of the net, giving the Zips the 1-0 lead. The Bulls could not find the net in the last 25 minutes and suffered just their first loss of the season. It was also the first time the Bulls have been shutout this year and the first time in 17 games.

UB falls to 3-1-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in the MAC. Akron remains undefeated, improving to 3-0-1 and 1-0-0 in conference play. The Bulls will be in action again on Wednesday, September, 15, when they host Niagara University at 7 p.m.
