UB Ties Michigan State

Bulls end in 1-1 tie to open season

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team opened their 1999 season on the road, battling Big Ten power Michigan State. Both teams scored a goal in the first half and ended the game with a 1-1 tie after neither team scored in the second half or overtime.

UB got on the board first, as Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda). The Spartans answered five minutes later on a goal from John Benoist in the 33rd minute to tie the score at 1-1.

Michigan State controlled the ball most of the game as they outshot UB 22-3, but the Bulls made the most of their three shots with the early goal. Goalie Justin Deming (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills) made his third career start, and recorded 12 saves in the game.

The Bulls, 0-0-1 on the season, will be at home this weekend as they host the UB Fall Classic on Saturday, September 4, and Sunday, September 5. The Bulls will face Central Connecticut State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The first game of the day will feature Pittsburgh against St. Francis, NY, beginning at 11 a.m. On Sunday, Pittsburgh will battle Central Connecticut State at 11 a.m. and UB will play St. Francis, NY, at 1:30 p.m.
