Thompson, a senior forward, had a career year for the Bulls in 2002. After scoring a total of three goals in his first three seasons, Thompson exploded for a team-best seven goals this year. His goal total was the most goals scored in a season since Tim Songer and Steve Butcher scored 11 and 14, respectively, in 1999.

The Bulls finished the 2002 season with a record of 6-9-1. They fell to Kentucky, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament.
