Three Bulls Named To Academic All-MAC Team

Bell, Stagnitta, and DeCarlo honored for success in the classroom

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2005 Academic All-MAC Team Tuesday, as three Bulls were honored with the annual award. Junior Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame), sophomore John DeCarlo (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East), and sophomore Frank Stagnitta (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) were announced as three of 12 players named to the team, and now continue the streak of at least one player on the Academic All-MAC Team since the 2000-01 season.

Bell, a political science major, played and started in all 19 games this season which included a berth in the MAC Championship game for the first time since joining the conference in 1998. He logged a career high 1652:00 minutes in net and allowed only 12 goals. His 0.65 GAA ranks him 15th in the nation, while posting nine shutout victories. He was second in the MAC in in Save Percentage (.821), GAA (0.65) and shutouts (9), behind Akron's Evan Bush in each category. With his 14 wins this season, Bell now holds the UB record for wins in a single season and is the all-time leader in wins for men's soccer. Bell is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and and has a 3.503 GPA.

DeCarlo was a spark off the bench, playing in nine games for the Bulls. He recorded his first point in the MAC quarterfinals game against IPFW, where he assisted on the final goal of the game. He is currently undeclared and has posted a 3.714 GPA.

Stagnitta is a mechanical engineering major and holds a 3.936 GPA. His tremendous success in the classroom is displayed on the field where he has also played in nine games as an alternate in the Bulls defensive backfield.

The Bulls finished their season with a school record 14-3-2, after going 8-8-2 the year before.
