Johnson, Catchpole, Clarke Named To All-MAC Teams
Three Bulls honored for their outstanding play this season
 Mbwana Johnson |
BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Mid-American Conference honored three members of the University at Buffalo men’s soccer team Thursday. Senior Mbwana Johnson (San Fernando, Trinidad/Pleasantville) was named as a member of the All-MAC First Team, while junior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) and sophomore Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) were named to the All-MAC Second Team. It was announced by the Mid-American Conference Thursday.
At the conclusion of each season, the MAC honors those who have led their team game after game with outstanding talent and clutch performances. Akron, the team that won the MAC regular season title this year, cleaned house by winning the top three awards of the year, as well as having seven players named to the first-team and two players named to the second-team. Forward Ross McKenzie won Player of the Year honors, leading the MAC with 15 goals, seven assists and 37 points. He also ranks fourth in the nation in points per game with 2.18 and goals per game with 0.88. Goalkeeper Evan Bush won newcomer of the year, posting a 0.44 GAA and 11 shutouts. His goals against average is third best in the nation. Coach of the Year honors also went to Akron coach Ken Lolla, whose team was the top scoring offense in the nation with three goals per game.
Johnson, one of three senior captains, has been known for his aggressive presence in a loaded backfield, allowing nine shutouts and only 12 goals. He has started in all 18 games for the Bulls and is among the best defenders in the MAC. It is his first MAC honor he has received in his two-years with the Bulls.
 Andrae Clarke |
Clarke had a breakout year for UB in his third-season, as he posted career-highs in every category. His 27 points is a career-high and ranks third in the MAC, while scoring eight goals to land him tied for sixth. Clarke’s 11 assists on the season is the most ever for a season in UB history, and his 0.63 assists per game average ranks eighth in the nation. During the week of Oct. 3, Clarke was named as MAC Player of the Week after scoring three goals and picking up an assist in two games against Canisius and Boston University.
 Lee Catchpole |
For a majority of the season, Catchpole was among those sitting atop the MAC in total points. With an injury keeping him out for the final three games of the regular season, Catchpole remains in the top five in eight of the MAC’s nine main offensive categories. He is fifth in the MAC in total points with 24, and second in points per game with 1.71. A 0.43 assists per game tally ranks him second only to Clarke and is fourth in total assists with six. In his first season last year, Catchpole led the team with six goals and 11 points while playing in only 11 of the team’s 19 games.
The Bulls sit and wait to make their next move on the season as they await word on whether they will receive a bid for the NCAA Tournament on Monday at 5 p.m., instead of the original time of 4 p.m. The selections show will air on ESPNEWS.
