He was one of five Bulls to start all 16 games and recorded one assist on the season. His assist came on Mike Geller's game-winning goal versus Central Connecticut State on September 5th. After missing a handful of games in the early season due to injury, Vavrina returned to finish the season with a 2.18 goals against average and a .708 save percentage for the Bulls. He has a 3.57 grade point average and is majoring in Management.

UB led the MAC with three selections to the squad, which is voted on by faculty-athletic representatives at MAC institutions. The Academic All-MAC honor is given to players who excelled in both athletics and academics. To qualify for the team, a player must have at least a 3.20 grade point average and must also have competed in at least 50 percent of his team's contests.

The other players selected to the 2003 Academic All-MAC Team were Cameron Knowles and Mike Marich (Akron), David DeGraff and Eric Duda (Bowling Green), Chris Austin and Olli Lehtimaki (Kentucky), and Andy Champion and Jason Sullivan (Northern Illinois).
