Men's Soccer Falls In Third OT, 1-0

Bulls Eliminated From MAC Tournament With Loss To Bowling Green

AKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Bowling Green in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Akron, OH, on Friday night. Bowling Green's Jon Hundley scored an unassisted goal at the 121:33 mark during the third overtime to break a 0-0 tie and give the Falcons the victory. Bowling Green advances to the semifinals and will play the regular-season conference champion Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday, November 11.

Buffalo finishes the season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a 2-3-1 conference mark. The Bulls, who ended the season going 3-1-1, were defeated by Bowling Green, 1-0, in overtime earlier in the season.

"The team played very well," said head coach John Astudillo. "We had some close calls and put some heavy pressure on them in the second half. Pitra, Yeates and Wozniak played terrific games. Everyone played with heart. It was a tough way to go out, they left everything on the field."

The Bulls played the final 90:04 one man short after sophomore Mike Geller (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) picked up a pair of yellow cards 1:12 apart which resulted in an ejection from the game just before the end of the first half.

Junior Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) kept the Bulls in the game with another strong game in goal, recording 10 saves. Offensively, junior Mike Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) and freshman Mike Ash (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had three shots each to lead Buffalo.

Bowling Green outshot Buffalo, 25-16 and held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The game marked the final match for seniors Kevin Pitra (Solon, OH/Solon), Bill Norberg (Allison Park, PA) and Matt Yeates (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's).
