Natrionally-ranked Zips end Buffalo's season

BOWLING GREEN, OH - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team's season came to an end on Friday following a 2-0 loss to the Akron Zips in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Justin Christafaris posted his 12th shutout of the season for the Zips, who were ranked 21st nationally in the latest NSCAA/Adidas poll.

Alex Odwell put Akron ahead in the game's ninth minute, scoring from 10 yards out.

Buffalo's Dave Pidgeon (Dorval, Quebec/Bishop Whelan) - who led Buffalo with four shots on the afternoon - nearly tied the game midway through the first half, but his shot hit the goalpost.

Akron sealed its victory when Amico DiFranco scored with nine minutes remaining in the contest.

UB recorded eight shots - none of which were shots on goal - while Akron finished with 10. Goalkeeper Chris Vavrina (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) made four saves for the Bulls.

The Zips will face Western Michigan on Sunday in one semifinal, while top-seeded Kentucky will face the Bowling Green/Northern Illinois winner in the other. The MAC Championship Game will be held at the highest remaining seed's home venue the following Sunday.

UB finished the season with an overall mark of 1-12-3, with their lone win coming against Central Connecticut State in early September.
